Novant Health UVA Health System to host Medicaid application and resource fair

Events aim to educate eligible adults and provide application assistance

MANASSAS, Va., December 19, 2018 – Medicaid expansion in Virginia is going into effect January 1, 2019 and Novant Health UVA Health System will host two Medicaid application and resource fairs to support participation among eligible adults in the region. Education, application assistance and healthcare resources will be provided during two free fairs that are open to the public on Tuesday, Jan. 15 in Culpeper and on Thursday, Jan. 24 in Manassas Park.

The events will be geared toward potential Medicaid eligible adults – ages 19 to 64 – who are within the service areas of Novant Health UVA Health System Culpeper Medical Center, Prince William Medical Center and Haymarket Medical Center. Non-eligible adults are also encouraged to attend to be connected to valuable, local resources and learn about community resources.

“As one of the area’s largest hospital systems, it is more than just our responsibility to educate the public, it’s our mission to improve the health of the communities we serve, one person at a time,” said Stephen Smith, MD, president and chief operating officer of Prince William Medical Center and Haymarket Medical Center. “No one should have to forgo life-saving medical treatment because of their inability to pay. By providing education and application assistance, we’re helping improve the health of our community for years to come.”

“We are pleased to have the resources, community partnerships and collaboration needed to host events like these that have the potential to change lives in our communities,” said Jeff Hetmanski, president of Culpeper Medical Center. “We are doing our part to ensure that everyone has access to healthcare in Culpeper, Orange and Madison counties.”

All attendees will have access to community healthcare resources and those eligible to receive Medicaid will also receive onsite assistance in enrolling for these benefits. Community members will also have the opportunity to meet healthcare providers from Novant Health UVA Health System medical centers and receive free adult health screenings, including prediabetes, cholesterol, blood pressure and BMI. Spanish translators will be onsite and education and literature will be available in both English and Spanish.

Both locations are easily accessible by public transit, and attendees can enjoy door prizes, computer access and refreshments. Free childcare will be provided at the Culpeper location by Kid Central, and the Manassas Park location by the Manassas Park Community Center.

Enrollment in Medicaid is open to Virginia residents – ages 19 to 64 – who meet income requirements, which vary by household size. Once enrolled, individuals will have coverage for services including doctor visits, hospital and emergency room services, prescriptions, labs and X-rays, mental health care, rehabilitation services and more.

Participants should plan to bring a picture ID, proof of citizenship (if not US born) and their Social Security card for advancing enrollment. For questions, community members are encouraged to visit heathcare.govcommonhelp.virginia.gov, or call the Cover Virginia Call Center at 855-242-8282.
