All three Novant Health UVA Health System acute care facilities receive ‘A’ grades from The Leapfrog Group
Local hospitals earn top safety recognition across entire health system for keeping patients safe
WARRENTON, Va., Dec. 14, 2020 – Novant Health UVA Health System, an integrated network of physician clinics, outpatient services and medical centers in northern and central Virginia, was awarded three ‘A’ grades from The Leapfrog Group’s fall 2020 Hospital Safety Grade, a designation recognizing hospitals’ efforts in protecting patients from harm and providing safer healthcare.
The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. The Safety Grade assigns an ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘D’ or ‘F’ grade to all general hospitals across the country and is updated every six months. It is based on a hospital’s performance in preventing medical errors, injuries, accidents, infections and other harms to patients in their care.
For fall 2020, Novant Health UVA Health System’s Prince William Medical Center, Haymarket Medical Center and Culpeper Medical Center were all awarded ’A’ grades. Novant Health UVA Health System was in the top third of hospitals nationwide – and among only 36 hospitals in the state of Virginia – to receive ‘A’ safety grades.
“We’re thrilled to receive system-wide recognition from The Leapfrog Group for our commitment to safety and quality of care – two pillars Novant Health UVA Health System works diligently to uphold,” said Al Pilong, chief executive officer, Novant Health UVA Health System.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged us all, and we’re so proud of our team members, physicians and advanced practice providers for their resiliency throughout these uncertain times and continued dedication to patient safety,” Pilong added. “It is an honor to see our efforts recognized across all three medical centers and have them named among the safest hospitals in the United States.”
“We are extremely grateful to hospital leadership and health care workers who have remained steadfast in prioritizing patient safety as our nation battles COVID-19,” said Leah Binder, president and chief executive officer, The Leapfrog Group.
“This ‘A’ is a testament to the care and commitment of those who work for Novant Health UVA Health System,” Binder added. “With the current pandemic exposing existing flaws within the U.S. health care system, we appreciate you putting patient safety first. Lives depend on it.”
Developed under the guidance of a national Expert Panel, the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade uses up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign grades to more than 2,600 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice per year. The Hospital Safety Grade’s methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and the results are free to the public.
