Novant Health UVA Health System partners with the community to ‘Open Minds’ about mental health and addiction

In May, Novant Health UVA Health System will host two mental health and addiction forums in partnership with local health, civic and community organizations in May for Mental Health Awareness Month. The forums, “Open Minds: Talking together about mental health and addiction,” will discuss behavioral health challenges and serve as an important first step in removing the stigma associated with these diseases.

The goal of the forums is to create meaningful dialogue around mental health and addiction, and to provide education, referral resources and a safe place to learn. In addition to offering our community members and families hope and awareness of mental health and addiction resources close to home, the forums provide access to mental health professionals and providers.

The keynote speaker for each event is Karyn O’Brien, clinical psychologist of NH UVA Northern Virginia Psychiatric Associates. Both events will offer a panel discussion featuring local behavioral health experts, including psychiatrists, clinical psychologists and therapists. Individual breakout sessions on a variety of mental health and addiction topics will be moderated by child and adult behavioral health providers. Attendees can learn about resources and services offered in their local community by talking with mental health, substance abuse professionals and other community and civic organizations, who will be represented at various tables.

Events will take place:

Tuesday, May 9, 5 to 8 p.m. Hylton Performing Arts Center Manassas

Tuesday, May 23, 5 to 8 p.m. Germanna's Daniel Technology Center Culpeper

Mark your calendar and join us for an important and enlightening evening. Both events are free and open to the public. RSVP today to save a seat.

These events are presented in collaboration with Prince William County Community Services, National Alliance on Mental Illness of Prince William, Pepperberries and Culpeper Wellness Foundation.
