Getting enough sleep is an essential part of living a healthy lifestyle. If you find yourself tossing and turning at night, Novant Health UVA Health System can help. Our sleep experts specialize in detecting, evaluating and treating a wide range of sleep abnormalities and sleep-related disorders. We can give you the help you need to form healthy sleeping patterns.

Sleep disorders have been linked to serious conditions like cardiovascular disease, obesity, depression, diabetes and high-blood pressure. Symptoms of sleep disorders may include snoring, awakenings, restless legs, daytime sleepiness, or unusual behaviors during sleep. By using advanced technology for diagnosis and treatment, our staff can help increase your health, restfulness and quality of life.

How you will be assessed

You will meet with one of our sleep specialists to evaluate your symptoms and sleeping habits. Once your sleep needs are identified, a preliminary diagnosis will be made and a course of treatment may be recommended.

A sleep study may be required if more information is needed for a diagnosis. This is performed overnight at our sleep lab located in our hospital. We will evaluate the length and quality of your sleep by measuring and analyzing the following factors:

  • Brain waves
  • Heart rate
  • Eye, chin and leg movement
  • Breathing, breathing effort and movement
  • Blood oxygen levels

Once our sleep study is completed and enough information is gathered, we will recommend the most appropriate treatment to address your needs.

To prepare for your sleep study, bring any personal and hygiene products that you normally would when you plan to spend the night away from home. You can even bring your own pillow and blanket. We want to make sure you are as comfortable as possible. Shower facilities are also available.
