Breastfeeding Resources

At Novant Health UVA Health System, we believe that in addition to offering a rewarding and nurturing experience, breastfeeding supports many health benefits for your growing baby — but learning to nurse can take time, practice and patience.

To help you succeed, we offer services such as prenatal breastfeeding classes and assessment, breastfeeding consultations, breastfeeding supplies and breastfeeding aids.

Breastfeeding Basics Class

International board-certified lactation consultants provide tips and techniques to prepare for successful breastfeeding. Partners are welcome to attend with the registered person.

Breastfeeding Basics Class

Class is free and registration is required.

A Nursing Mother’s Place

Learning to nurse can take time, practice and patience. At Novant Health UVA Health System, our International Board Certified Lactation Consultant(s) can teach you techniques for a successful nursing experience, provide follow-up contacts and promote confidence in your nursing abilities.

Patients may call and schedule an appointment to receive support on any concerns related to their breastfeeding experience, including:

  • Latching assistance
  • Feeding evaluations
  • Back-to-work appointments
  • Other issues or concerns

You can call and schedule your own appointment with Novant Health UVA Health System outpatient lactation or be referred by your doctor. Our lactation consultants will share feeding plans and information with both your doctor and your baby’s doctor to help coordinate your family’s care.
