Heart disease is the number one killer of women, and kills almost twice as many women as all cancers, including breast cancer. Preventive care is essential to early detection.
Know your risk for heart disease
Taking care of your heart begins with knowing if you are at risk for heart disease. The best way to reduce your risk for developing heart disease is to understand and address your risk factors. It should not be surprising that 2 out of 3 women have at least one risk factor for heart disease.
Two out of three women have at least one of the following risk factors:
- Family history of coronary artery disease, stroke or
premature heart disease
- Age 55 or older
- Postmenopausal, or have had their ovaries removed
- Sedentary lifestyle
- High blood pressure
- High total cholesterol and/or low HDL cholesterol
- Metabolic syndrome
- Cigarette smoking
